Today was one of those days when I start teaching at 7:55 and go straight through until 1:00. But oh how sweet 1:00 is when I'm finished for the day and I have my classroom to myself! Towards the end of the day, I was determined to sit at my desk and get a ton of work finished. I was focused, ready to keep going until EVERY task on my to do list was taken care of. Why is it when you are determined to be focused, everything in the world seems to distract you? Seven people must have come by during that hour and the hour after school when I was trying to get my work done. At the time, all I could think about was "geez, I wish I could get this work done," and quite honestly, I wasn't giving each person my all when they came in my door to talk to me. One student wanted to talk about current events and the war; a teacher wanted some help with a lesson for tomorrow; another teacher just wanted to say "hi" because we hadn't had a chance to touch base since school started; and an administrator wanted me to implement one of my ideas that I had spoken to her about yesterday. Everyone wanted a little piece of me and I was annoyed.
Sitting here right now, thinking about my day and how I was so unfocused with each of these people, makes me a little sad. I could have given so much more. I could have given my undivided attention for just a few minutes to make them feel special, but instead I only gave them a portion of my attention. Multi-tasking can be a great talent and a great downfall.
I started this blog to try to do something kind everyday and write about it, but unfortunately today, I have to tell you where I failed to be kind. What a learning lesson though! Sometimes the best thing we can do--the most kind thing we can do--is to give a little piece of ourselves to the people that crave our attention even if it forces us to put down something we are doing to focus on just them. LESSON LEARNED!
On a positive note, the kindness revolution is getting bigger. Our school is going to celebrate the National Day of Service (September 11th) with a "Random Acts of Kindness Day"! That's the idea my administrator wanted me to implement! How exciting! :)

A random act of kindness that was recently shown to my husband who is a police officer. He was going thru a fast food restaurant to grab a quick bite to eat between his calls to duty. When he got to the window to pay, the cashier said.. "It is paid for, Sir... you owe nothing. The person in the car ahead of you paid your bill." He will never forget the kindness that was shown to him . Such a small act and yet such a powerful blessing to my hubby. Jesus paid our price too so we can have eternal life by dying on that cross. We need to look for opportunities to bless others.. Thanks for the blogging! Love it!
ReplyDeleteYou encouraged me today, just by allowing me to read your thoughts in this blog.... so actually I guess you met your goal... you made my day! I look forward to your daily blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks to all that read! I'm glad that it is blessing folks out there!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing, Rachel! You remind us of what Jesus said, "When all these things come to pass, look up and lift up your head, for your redemption draws near."
ReplyDeleteWe may not be able to conquer the hatred in men's hearts with our weapons, but we certainly have a chance of accomplishing that wonderful goal with HIS love!
