Learning to Receive

I woke up this morning feeling defeated...ever been there? The day had not yet started and I was exhausted thinking about the mountain of work that lay ahead of me for the next few weeks--Veterans Day events, a field trip, moderating a debate with my students, service learning internship meetings, parent conferences, grades being due, revising a church constitution--the stress fell on me like a ton of bricks and all I wanted to do was crawl back into bed and cover up my head! Then I got to school and started complaining about it to the people around me when someone finally said, "Hey, why don't you delegate. There's four of us standing right here and we can help!" Why had that not occurred to me? Why was I complaining about my situation instead of working to resolve it? Pride? Martyrdom?

So delegate is what I did! I allowed other people to help me. I got a lesson plan from a fellow teacher and asked another to cover a meeting that I have scheduled for tomorrow with three students for Veterans Day. The world will not cease to turn if I have to get help!

How often do we think the world revolves around us and what WE can do for the world? Sometimes pride stops us from giving others the joy of helping us. We have to learn to receive from others what we want to give all of the time. There's joy for others when we receive!
