It is very easy to tell when someone is not paying attention to you. I stand in front of 30+ teenagers every day in class and even in a crowd you can point out the kids who are daydreaming, sleeping or ignoring you! It's amazing though how good it feels when someone is paying attention. When I'm in front of a classroom full of kids who are engaged, excited and interested, there's not a feeling like it in the world!
Today I spent about an hour with a young person. There wasn't a reason for the meeting...we were just "hanging out" and I was listening to her what was going on in her life. I think that showing interest in someone's life can speak more into their soul than anything else. Teenagers today just want to feel valued. We ALL want to feel valued. We want to know that someone cares about all of the things going on in our lives. Even when we don't want to listen, our attention can change a person's life.
I would encourage everyone today to show interest in someone else's life, especially a young person's life. You have NO idea what that will mean to those kids!
